Gmail is pre-installed on Android phones, tablets and computers, just as Apple mail is on Mac phones, tablets, and computers. It is also preinstalled on the Chrome Book, a laptop that runs on the Android platform.
A Chromebook is a laptop of a different breed. Instead of Windows 10 or macOS, Chromebooks run Google's Chrome OS. These machines are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the cloud. If you have an Apple device (iMac, iPhone, iPad), Gmail is not preinstalled and must be downloaded from the App Store. If you have a Windows device, it comes preinstalled with Windows Mail and Gmail may be accessed through the web. Although Gmail works with most browsers, e.g. Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer/Edge, it has features that work best with the Chrome browser.
The Chrome Web Store (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions) includes applications, Themes, and Extensions that enhance the use of Gmail and other Google applications. Inbox by Gmail
Inbox by Gmail is an optional application that you may download on your mobile or tablet devices. Inbox integrates many of the features from the updated web version of Gmail. You can see labels and messages filtered through the rules you set up. Once you master the plain Jane version of Gmail, you may want to try Inbox. It does not remove the plain Jane Gmail application, but is a separate application that provides a different look and the developers are making updates that may replace the need to use a laptop or desktop computer for modifying Settings.
